How to make vectors and vexel art using Photoshop by entreSigns

  This is my first blog about using application in Photoshop CS3 and I'll try to teach you on how to make a vexel and vector's art using this amazing application and I'll make this tutorial into STEP by STEP guide to make it easier to understand, this will be favour for the new user cause it's has a content of walk through on how to make this picture into a nicely graphic art using Photoshop. this tutorial lesson is especially for the new and already user of Photoshop.

  Now let start I'll choose the picture of our beloved Mr. President Noynoy Benigno Aquino III and I'm using Photoshop CS3 version.

  First open the picture of  Mr. Pnoy in Photoshop CS3  then go to Menu Tab then click the Image Size or hold Alt+Ctrl+I this was the shortcut key for the Image Size like the picture show below. Set the pixel dimensions with the size of Width: 1200 pixels, Height: 821 pixels, and Resolution of 200 pixels/inch this picture size are enough.

  Now go to Image Tab then click Adjustments then choose the Hue/Saturation or simply hold Ctrl+U then set the Hue: +5 Saturation: +21 this size are enough




  Then set the brush size into Master Diameter: 16 pixels, Mode: normal, Strength: 50%.

  Now press Z then click and zoom it at the face of Mr. Pnoy so you can work easily and see the pattern on his face.

 
  Select Smudge tool then set into Master Diameter:16 pixels, Mode: normal, Strength: 50% and try to smudge the color at the fore head of Mr. Pnoy now move your mouse circular, horizontal or vertical try to follow the pattern on his fore head like show below.

  After you done at fore head color smudging now try to smudge the color pattern at the whole skin of his face, and hand.

  This it was the result after you use the Smudge tool show below.

  Now go to filter tab, artistic, and select the Poster Edges this will reveal the Vexel pattern on his face

  Set the Edge Thickness: 2, Edge Intensity: 1, and Posterization: 2 like show below this will be the guide pattern that you'll follow

  Now you can see the Vexel pattern that made by the Poster Edges Effect so you'll surely seen the color combination pattern this will be the guide for smudging the face of Mr. Pnoy

  For now let go to the hairs instead of the face of Mr. Pnoy later we will be back soon on face smudging, let edit the hairs select the eyedropper tool and hit the light color at his hair like show below pick the most slightly light color.

  Select brush tool with Master Diameter: 9 pixels, Mode: normal, Opacity: 100%, Flow: 100% and brush the hair with the color that pick by the eyedropper tool, make sure this was slightly light color.

  This was the the result after you done doing the brushing  the hairs show below, look the color that has been pick by the eyedropper tool this is the color that I've been choose using the eyedropper tool show below.

  Now change the brush size into 2 pixels then try to make a hairs pattern at the side of  his fore head

  After doing a side hairs pattern on his fore head, now change the brush color into darken color then draw a line using brush tool with a 2pixels all over the hair.

  After doing that use the smudge tool to smudge the dark and light color this is the result after you does then set the Master Diameter: 20 pixels Mode: normal Strength:27%

  Then change the color again in light color, then use the brush tool to draw a line pattern show below.

  This is the result after you draw a line show below.

  Now use the burn tool then set the Master Diameters: 35 pixels, Range: midtones, Exposure: 50% use this at the side of the hair between the fore head of  Mr. Pnoy show below.

  Then use the dodge tool to enhance the color set the Master Diameters: 9 pixels, Range: midtones, Exposure: 25% this was the result after doing it

  After Dodging use the smudge tool again to mix the color of hair of Mr. Pnoy it help to enhance the color of light and dark, follow the hair pattern set the Brush: 5 pixels Mode: normal Strength: 70%

  Just repeat the step by step of makin' hairs pattern at the top of fore head of Mr. Pnoy and this was the result show below.

  Now let go back in smudging the face color pattern, use the smudge tool to mix the color of vexel pattern  set Master Diameter: 21 pixels, Mode: normal, Strength: 32%.

  Try using hard round brushes it's good enough to mix color using smudge tool rather than soft round pixels after you smudge the vexel pattern this was the result show below.

  Try to have a copy of original picture it's will help or guide you to compared the dark vexel and light vexel when you using a Smudge tool.

  Just repeat the smudge tooling technique until you feel it's the same pattern of original picture.

  Now you see the result on face of Mr. Pnoy it's not done maybe we almost at the half stage of art's be patient.

  Now lets move forward let smudge again the hand of  Mr. Pnoy

  Lets make nails pattern in  finger let make it's clear by using smudge tool circularly downward the smudge tool at the dark color show below.

  Now let go to the eyes this is my favorite part when editing, smudge again the skin part that are nearer in the right eye of  Mr P'noy.

  After smudging the skin now use the Dodge Tool  to enlighten the color white in the eye use exposure at 50%

  Again and again smudge the white color

  After smudging changes the color picker (Foreground Color) use color red then brush it at the lower side of the eye.

  
  Then use smudge tool to make eyelid in the lower portion then add some burn tool to add dark color then smudge the dark color, the result show at the second after this picture below.

  Now go to cornea let enhance the color of it, now use the dodge tool to enlighten the color of the cornea enlighten the circular side only, after you enlighten the color of cornea use smudge tool to make a line at the light color in the cornea.

  Then after makin' a line use dodge and burn to enhance color.

  Now we done in enhancing the color of cornea show below. Let make some color on it I'll be using a brown color

  Duplicate the layer thumbnail naming background then select naming background copy then press Ctrl+A  then press delete

  After deleting now let change the color I'll choose brown color show below.

  Now we using brush tool let set the Master Diameter: 25 pixels, Mode: normal, Opacity: 100%, and the Flow:100%.

 Now brush it pointing at cornea.

  Choose naming background copy then choose the blending option.

  Set the opacity in 70% then delete the unnecessary color that has been made by the brush tool.

  Hold Ctrl then press naming background then right click choose convert to smart object then right click again select rasterize layer.

  Then repeat the smudge, dodge, burn tool to enhance the color of the eye.

  We almost done at the left eye now let's make the eye glasses some natural lookin' using dodge tool.

Now we done in making a light color line in lower left of the eye glass of Mr. Pnoy.

  Duplicate the layer thumbnail then hold Ctrl+A then press delete after deleting choose blending option.

  Set the opacity at 22%

  Choose the brush tool set this at hard round 19 pixel, mode normal, opacity 100% and flow 100%

  Click the button of set to enable airbrush capabilities.

  Now brush make some glass on it. It will give a natural glass look then use delete tool to delete the unnecessary white color that made by the brush. Now hold Ctrl then click the two layer thumbnail at the right side then right click then choose convert to smart object

 Now right click the layer thumbnail again then choose rasterize layer.

   Use dodge and burn again and make some line on the glass, just repeat the step by step on the left eye then go through the right eye.

  After you finish editing the right eye and clear the eye glass reader of Mr. Pnoy this was the result

  Now I'm using Dodge and Smudge tool to enhance the color of the lip of Mr. Pnoy.

  Repeat the step of makin' a hairs pattern then make a eye brow.

  Use eye dropper tool then click it in the skin color then use brush to make a line between the hair, after that use smudge tool to enhance it.

  Duplicate the layer thumbnail then hold Ctrl+A then press delete then erase the background at the back of Mr. Pnoy then use a white color then press G then click on the empty thumb layer the result show below.

  I choose Philippine flag for the Background of Mr. P'noy show above, then use smudge tool to enhance the color of the flag it will look like a paint after you do show below.

  Now let make shadow behind of Mr. P'noy choose blending option show above.

 Set the angle: 52, distance: 18px, spread: 0%, size: 21px, noise: 0% show above.

  So let put the yellow ribbon that symbolized their family, use magic wand to select the yellow color then click it in the black color and press delete show below.

  Now minimize the window and drag this at the left side of  Mr. P'noy, set the opacity: 49% show below.
